Scratchboard or "scraperboard" is a paper or board surface that is finely and uniformly layered with clay (usually white) and then coated with dense black India ink. The technique is simple - using a blade or stylus scratch into the top layer removing the black and exposing the white underlayer. This technique is well suited for fine detail work and is favoured by many wildlife artists. Black reveals White.
